LokKathayein is a space for collecting, preserving, and sharing the folk stories, memories, traditions, and oral histories that connect people with their communities.
Why LokKathayein?
Every community has stories that are passed from one generation to another. Some are remembered through festivals and songs. Others survive in conversations between grandparents, parents, neighbours, and friends.
Many of these stories never make it into books or archives. They remain part of everyday life, carried by memory and shared whenever someone asks, “Do you know the story about...? ”
LokKathayein is an attempt to give those stories a place to live.
What you can find here
The portal brings together folk narratives and community stories from different places, allowing readers to discover the cultural ideas, places, people, beliefs, and traditions woven into them.
Stories may be ancient or relatively recent. Some may be widely known within a region, while others may have survived only within a family or a small community.
Alongside the story itself, we aim to preserve useful context about its origin, language, themes, and cultural setting whenever that information is available.
Share a story
If you know a folk tale, local legend, family story, traditional narrative, or piece of oral history that deserves to be remembered, you can contribute it to LokKathayein.
Contributions are reviewed before they become part of the public collection. This helps us maintain the quality and context of the stories while keeping the collection open to voices from different communities.
Preserving more than words
A folk story is rarely just a story. It can carry the memory of a landscape, a relationship, a custom, a festival, a journey, or a way of understanding the world.
Our hope is that LokKathayein can become a growing digital collection where these stories can be discovered by today's readers and remain available for generations to come.
